Few people enjoy the task of running around. This makes most runners a very curious breed, a group that is set apart from the rest. One of the most interesting phenomena, perhaps, is the evolution of a runner. They tend to graduate from running in parks and other terrain quite quickly. This leaves them longing for more unusual and challenging races that they can attend and possibly break a couple of records.

The natural beauty and abundance of landscape in Canada makes this an ideal spot to host a variety of races. Some of these are certainly a curiosity, but all of them, nonetheless, are incredibly demanding. Of course, even among the tough, there are some races that are considered downright gruelling. Let’s take a look at some of the more popular and challenging races afforded to Canadian runners:

Top Races in Canada

These are some of the top races in Canada:

The Vancouver Sun Run- http://www.vancouversun.com/sunrun/index.html

This race is the largest 10K race in Canada. Last year alone, this popular event attracted almost fifty thousand runners! The race has been increasing in fame and popularity since its inception over thirty years ago. The brainchild of former Canadian Olympians, this race is held to promote the overall health and wellbeing of people across Canada. The event only seems to be garnering more and more attention each year.

Ottawa 10K, Run Ottawa

The Ottawa 10K holds the prestige of being the only IAAF Gold Label 10K event in the country. In fact, it is one among the only four in the world. This race largely attracts elite athletes, intent on pushing themselves to the limits. The race begins at Ottawa City Hall before heading down to Rideau Canal, Dow’s Lake, before finally ending at Pretoria Bridge. It is certainly a must-end event for those determined to be the best.

Hamilton’s Around the Bay Road Race

Hamilton’s Race certainly has a claim to fame as the oldest race ever to be hosted in North America. Commencing in 1894, this race has been run by many of the finest athletes, including Gold medallists. Runners can choose between 5K and 30K runs, and set off on a course set around the natural harbor of Hamilton.

The Not Since Moses Run

This aptly named race offers runners the opportunity to cover 5K or 10K at the bottom of the Bay of Fundy. The race takes place at low tide, when a considerable amount of the bay bed is left exposed. Runners slog through the mud in hopes to be the first person at the finish line.

Most Challenging Runs in Canada

For certain individuals, the more gruelling the race, the better. Here is a list of the most challenging running events in the country:

The Grouse Grind

What this race lacks in distance, it makes up for with sheer unadulterated steepness. It has been measured at just 1.8 miles. Nonetheless, the track takes you up Grouse Mountain, which is a staggering 2800 feet.

Canadian Death Race

There is clearly no subterfuge with this sheer test of endurance. It begins on a 4200 foot plateau and involves over 1600 feet of elevation change. This all takes place on a trail that is 125 kilometers long. In addition to the treacherous terrain, this area is also notorious for sudden and extreme changes in climate.

Yukon Artic Ulta

The incredible freezing temperature is only just a part of the equation when considering this deadly race. Runners (and other forms of competitors) must battle temperatures that have been known to drop to -20. Participants get to choose to run a distance of either 100, 200, 300, or 430 miles. The weather also makes it incredibly difficult for runners to find the actual path of the race on occasion!

There is something for every Canadian runner. Whether novice, experienced, cautious, or extreme, there are several opportunities for anyone who likes to run. Regardless of where you live, there is always a race, if you are willing to run it.
